National search for new Topeka Zoo CEO ends

22 March 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center says it has found its new CEO following a national search.

The Topeka Zoo said in a press release that Dr. Christina Castellano has accepted the position of CEO. She brings with her a wealth of experience for wildlife conservation thanks to her time spent in leadership positions at other zoos and aquariums across the country.

“We are delighted to welcome Christina as our new CEO,” said Fred Patton, President of the Topeka Zoo Board of Directors. “Her extensive background in zoo management, conservation, and education make her the ideal candidate to lead our institution forward. We are confident that under her leadership, the Topeka Zoo will continue to thrive as a leading center for wildlife conservation, education, and community engagement.”

Patton says Castellano is recognized internationally as a conservation biologist and published author. She has a Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences from Fordham University and an MBA with Western Governors University.

Castellano has previously worked at Utah’s Hogle Zoo, Loveland Living Planet Aquarium and Hawk Watch International. She also has experience in breeding critically endangered species for reintroduction programs at zoos in Australia.

“I am honored and excited to join the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center,” Castellano said. “The Topeka Zoo has a long-standing commitment to conservation, education, and community service, and I look forward to working collaboratively with our staff, volunteers, partners, and community to build upon that legacy.”

Castellano will oversee every aspect of the Topeka Zoo’s operations including animal care, development initiatives and visitor experiences. She will work closely with the zoo’s Board of Directors, staff and other stakeholders to ensure it continues to enrich the community with wildlife conservation.

Patton said her first official day with the zoo has yet to be determined.

The Topeka Zoo’s former CEO, Brendan Wiley, departed in September 2023. The zoo partnered with Canopy Strategic Partners to aid in its search for Wiley’s replacement.
