WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas State University Wildcats stormed back from down 4-0 to grab a midweek win over in-state foe Wichita State University on Tuesday, 8-6.
Wichita State threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning with a runner in scoring position with no one out, but Wildcats pitcher Jackson Wentworth closed things down with three straight outs to give Kansas State the win.
Shockers pitcher Tyler Dobbs started the game and went 5.1 innings. He looked solid for the first four of those innings, but things fell apart in the sixth when the Wildcats put up six runs.
Dobbs was replaced in the sixth inning after giving up six hits and allowing four runs in his start. He struck out six batters in the game.
In the other dugout, Kansas State’s Andrew Evans got the start and went just two innings before he was pulled. Mason Buss was awarded the win for the Wildcats, pitching one inning of no-hit, no-run ball.
Wichita State got the scoring started by putting two on the board in the first and two in the third. Kansas State got their first run of the game off a misplayed bloop single. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth before Kansas State pushed six across in the sixth.
The Shockers got two more of their own in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t get anything else going for the rest of the game. Kansas State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
The loss puts Wichita State at 13-7 on the season, and Kansas State at 14-6. Up next for the Shockers is a road trip to Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday to open the conference slate.
Kansas State is also on the road to start conference play as the Wildcats will head to Houston to play the Cougars on Saturday.
