Man charged after firing at 3 vehicles on I-235 in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A man has been charged after firing a gun at three vehicles on Interstate 235 in Wichita early Friday morning.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Kamil Lweno has been charged with the following:

Three counts of criminal discharge of a firearm; recklessly at an occupied vehicle

One count of aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon

One count of criminal damage to property; without consent value < $1000

Lweno is being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 1.

According to the Wichita Police Department, officers responded at 1:42 a.m. on Friday, March 15, for reports of a “suspicious individual wielding a weapon” near I-235 and Central. Callers reported gunshots and seeing a man walking along the median firing a gun.

At the same time, officers responded to a crash scene near the 1900 block of N. Westdale. Upon arrival, officers found a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee abandoned after a single-vehicle crash.


Three injured, two critically, in crash in Newton

When officers arrived in the 1800 block of North Interstate 235, they apprehended a 20-year-old man, now identified as Lweno, who matched the description of the shooter. He was taken into custody.

An investigation revealed Lweno to be the registered owner of his abandoned Jeep. A firearm and multiple spent cartridge casings were found by officers.

A further investigation identified three people, a 28-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, and a 56-year-old woman, who reported their vehicles being targets of gunfire during the incident. All of them were uninjured.

Lweno was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and one count of possession of marijuana.
