Wrong number leads to donation for children in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — A wrong number has given children in Garden City who may experience crime some comfort.

It began when an American Legion post commander named Gary DeMars began calling around to law enforcement agencies. His post wanted to donate gifts to police departments that could help comfort children who have been the victims or witnesses of a crime.

The Garden City Police Department says the conversation had continued for about 10 or 15 minutes before DeMars realized that he was talking to the police department in Garden City, Kansas, not Garden City, Michigan.

Paddy Day Parade is on Saturday, some streets will close

According to Wikipedia, there are 18 Garden City communities in the United States, not counting a neighborhood in Virginia and one in Canada. Maitlin, South Dakota, used to be called Garden City, and it is the nickname of Missoula, Montana.

Regardless, a box of stuffed animals and other gifts from American Legion Post 147 in Northville, Michigan, arrived at the police department this week. Garden City Police thanked DeMars that Post 147 for their generosity.

Northville and Garden City are the western suburbs of Detroit.
