Storm Track 3 Forecast: Cooler but still spring-like into the weekend

14 March 2024

The system responsible for yesterday’s severe weather that produced a few tornadoes in Northeast Kansas and multiple reports of large hail is still nearby.  New severe thunderstorms are developing from Texas through eastern Oklahoma into the Ozarks of Missouri down into Arkansas with the severe threat expected to grow into the Ohio Valley through this evening.

All forms of severe weather are possible for those folks, including tornadoes. Multiple states are under tornado watches Thursday evening.

Cooler air is working in on northerly winds today for us.  Leftover rain showers are possible across northern and western Kansas.

The Wichita Metro will be untouched by this moisture but gain a few clouds from time to time. Temperatures tonight will be chilly with more clouds stuck over western Kansas.

Any remaining rain will try to mix to snow with cooling temperatures tonight.  Colorado wins for the snowfall accumulations out of this to the tune of several more inches.

Clouds clear Friday with seasonable temperatures.

Count on a slight bump in the warmth Saturday ahead of the next cold front.  A few rain showers will pop up across southern Kansas Saturday.  It will be sparse and any accumulation will be light. Southwest Kansas may stand the best shot of a raindrop or two.

Temperatures cool Sunday into Monday.  We warm again the following Tuesday.  More scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible next Wednesday into Thursday before a much stronger cold front sweeps through the Sunflower State before the following weekend.

Moisture may accompany this latter frontal passage and if enough rides on the colder air, some snow may fall in parts of the state.  Still too early to discuss potential snowfall accumulations as this track will be refined as we get closer.
