K-State Research and Extension’s youth lawn mowing clinic teaches lawn care, business

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — K-State Research and Extension, in partnership with the Derby Recreation Commission, hosted their annual youth lawn mowing clinic on Wednesday.

The clinic taught the 5th through 9th graders in attendance about the types of grass grown in the area, how to maintain those types of grasses, lawn mower safety, how to maintain a lawn mower and business skills.

“Whether kids are going to use this information to mow laws at home or turn it into a business, we are trying to help educate them and the community to be safe lawn mowing and to potentially use it to start a business at a young age,” said Matthew McKernan, a horticulture agent with the K-State Extension and Research Office in Sedgwick County.

Participants received business cards and safety equipment at the end of the class.
