KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are making moves to continue adding money to the salary cap.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has restructured his contract to clear an additional $21.6 million worth of salary-cap space for the Chiefs, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Mahomes’ 2024 cap hit was set at $58.6 million, according to Spotrac. With the restructuring, that cap hit has lowered to $37 million in 2024, $66.2 million in 2025 and $68.6 million in 2026.
With those high cap hits, Mahomes restructures are almost a yearly certainty so the Chiefs can continue adding pieces to their current dynasty.
The Chiefs restructured his contract in September, positioning Mahomes to make $208.1 million between 2023 and 2026. It was the largest deal over a four-season span in NFL history.
The Chiefs’ 2024 offseason moves have focused on retaining pieces they had this past season.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones signed a five-year contract with $95 million guaranteed to make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history. Linebacker Drue Tranquill also re-signed a three-year contract worth $19 million with $13 million guaranteed.
The Chiefs have also franchise-tagged cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and are set to pay him almost $20 million, but Sneed is free to look for a trade from Kansas City while they negotiate a long-term contract.
