3 dogs euthanized after ‘Parvo incident’ at El Dorado Animal Shelter

EL DORADO, Kan. (KSNW) — Three dogs were euthanized after what the El Dorado Animal Shelter is calling a “Parvo incident.”

Per state regulations, the Shelter has had to temporarily stop accepting intakes and adoptions.

“Due to state regulations for when the shelter can be open and operating, the dogs in the shelter who were not vaccinated against Parvo at the time of the positive test could no longer be adopted out,” said the EDAS.

The Shelter says they are not set up to treat animals for Parvo.

“In order to reopen the shelter in a timely manner, the only option was to humanely euthanize the three unvaccinated dogs,” said the EDAS. “We regret that this situation occurred and want to remind everyone of the importance of vaccinating your animals so they are never put in this situation.”

The American Veterinary Medical Association says canine parvovirus is a highly contagious disease.

“The virus attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and other canids like coyotes, wolves, and foxes. In puppies, the virus also can damage the heart muscle,” said the AVMA.

Parvo can be prevented by vaccinations and other preventative measures, including good hygiene.

Animals that were already vaccinated and at the Shelter will be available for adoption once it reopens. Animals available for adoption at the EDAS can be found here.

The EDAS says staff are doing the necessary cleaning it will take to be able to accept and adopt animals again. They expect to reopen on Thursday or Friday.
