Wet, wintry weather for the second half of the week

6 March 2024

A weak piece of energy has sparked a little moisture to the west and northwest since last night. Most of it has been in the form of light rain but a few snowflakes could mix in early this morning.

This is of little concern as we look ahead to widespread showers and storms beginning tonight. Before we open the door to unsettled conditions, mid-week will be mild with a mix of sun and clouds.

During the overnight is when we will start to see an uptick in showers.

Scattered storms will also begin to develop and continue into Thursday morning. Rainfall could be heavy at times, especially between Central and Eastern Kansas.

Most low temperatures into early Thursday will stay above freezing so much of the precipitation will be in the form of liquid.

Thursday will be a weather aware day as the Storm Prediction Center has expanded our risk of seeing a strong to severe storm. Hail and damaging wind gusts are the main threats.

Even though some storms will be possible early in the day Thursday, we will need to watch out for redeveloping stronger storms during the afternoon and into the evening.

By late afternoon and evening Thursday we will start to see a switch from wet to wintry weather to the northwest. After sundown, a rain/snow mix and snow will eventually make its way down into Southwest Kansas during the night while there will be ongoing rain showers to the east.

Colder air keeps spilling into the Sunflower State, making Friday the coolest day of the week. But that means warmer days will quickly follow.

Friday starts wet and wintry. Moisture gradually moves out through the day as we dry out from northwest to southeast. It may take all the way through Friday night for this to happen.

Enjoy a warming weekend and then we turn spring-like again into next week. The next storm system starts to move in by the middle of next week.
