HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The sheriff in Harvey County is repeating himself in hopes of finally getting the message across: Harvey County is not a sanctuary county.
It takes only a few seconds of searching the internet to find websites listing Harvey County as a sanctuary county. Harvey County Sheriff Chad Gay says those websites are wrong.
“We’re not a sanctuary county. Period,” he said.
Gay says sanctuary jurisdictions have chosen not to cooperate in the prosecution of undocumented immigrants.
“We have long-standing working relationships with federal, state and local partners, and we intend to continue to work alongside and support those agencies in their work for years to come,” he said.
Gay said Harvey County will continue to assist in the lawful detainment and transfer of people suspected or convicted of crimes.
He said Harvey County has made that clear in the past, but it continues to be marked as a sanctuary county on some websites despite trying to get those websites to remove the county’s name.
Gay said he felt the need to clear up the confusion that happens when people find the mistaken information.
