Wichita State takes series with 4-1 win over Utah Tech

2 March 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The bats were quieter than they were on Friday, but the WSU pitching was on point as the Shockers downed the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday, 4-1.

Right-handed pitcher Daniel Zang got the start and went 6.2 innings nearly flawlessly, striking out eight and only allowing one run off a fielder’s choice in the first inning.

Third baseman Camden Johnson went 3-for-3 from the plate and scored a run. Left fielder Derek Williams went 2-for-4 and knocked in three RBI in the game, both of which were home runs.

Both teams were quiet for most of the game. Utah Tech scored its lone run of the game off the aforementioned fielder’s choice in the second inning and Wichita State responded in the bottom of the frame with a home run to left-center field by Josh Livingston.

The Shockers added another run in the sixth inning when Williams smacked a home run to left field. He added the other two WSU runs in the eighth on a two-run homer to put the Shockers ahead 4-1.

Nate Adler got his third save of the season, striking out one batter in the one inning of work he had.

With the win the Shockers now have control of the series. They’ll go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon from Eck Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
