Temperatures begin to climb and so will fire concerns

29 February 2024

We wrap up the month of February with highs in the 50s and 60s. Many of us will not be as chilly as yesterday as temperatures start to improve after a colder mid-week.

A southerly switch of our winds will set us up for warmer days ahead but will also keep the threat of grassfires high. Fire Weather Warnings have been issued for our counties bordering Northeast Kansas.

There is some moisture to our south that is headed in our direction that will lead to a small chance for rain today. First, the cloud cover will increase to the south.

A sprinkle or shower will be possible by midday in our Oklahoma Panhandle counties and around the Kansas Oklahoma line. Any moisture through the afternoon and evening will work its way up around the Kansas Turnpike and east before eventually getting pulled out of the area into the overnight.

Sunshine returns Friday and temperatures continue to improve as we head into the weekend. There will be a cold front that moves in Sunday into Monday. Moisture associated with this system is not looking likely.

The late weekend front will also cause a 15 to 20 degree drop in high temperatures Monday. Since it will continue to be pretty dry over the coming days with a strong breeze, please continue to be proactive in not being the spark that starts a fire.
