KU upset by BYU for first home loss of season

28 February 2024

LAWRENCE (KSNT) – KU men’s basketball had its 19-game home winning streak snapped on Tuesday night.

The Jayhawks fell to BYU, which was nationally ranked a few days prior to the meeting, 76-68. Kansas had not lost at home since January of 2023. KU blew a 12-point second half lead in the loss.

KU had previously won 71 home games in a row when leading at halftime.

Kansas never trailed in the first half, despite some adversity: KU was without Kevin McCullar again, freshman starter Johnny Furphy picked up two fouls in the first 12 minutes and Nick Timberlake, who started in McCullar’s place, took a scary-looking fall in the first half. Timberlake exited the game but returned a few minutes later and appeared to be healthy in the second half.

KU led by six at halftime, despite BYU banging six 3-pointers before the break.

KU opened the lead to double-figures in the first three minutes of the second half but the Cougars wouldn’t go away. BYU’s 3-point shooting specialty kept them in the game. The visitors pulled within one on multiple occasions and before finally taking their first lead of the game with 4:26 left in the game.

The Cougars extended their lead to three with 3:23 left. Nick Timberlake delivered huge answer with a 3-pointer to tie it with 3:00 to play. Then, BYU hit another three and Dickinson answered with another huge shot from beyond the arc to tie it.

BYU pulled ahead by six in the final minute and that deficit was too large to overcome for Kansas.

The Jayhawks fall to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in league play. KU is now 14-1 at home on the season.
