12 February 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs used overtime to win Super Bowl LVIII 25-22 over the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chiefs are the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2003-04.

The Niners opened the game with a fumble from running back Christian McCaffrey on the first drive to give Kansas City the ball early.

No points were scored until the Niners scored on a field goal late in the first quarter. A 55-yard field goal from Niners kicker Jake Moody broke the Super Bowl record for longest field goal.

The Chiefs were on the way to taking a lead on the next drive in the red zone until a fumble from running back Isiah Pacheco led to the Niners recovering the ball and stopping the Chiefs’ momentum.

The play before that, quarterback Patrick Mahomes found wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a 52-yard pass.

The Niners took a 10-0 lead with less than five minutes to go after a trick play saw an SF receiver throw a pass to McCaffrey who ran for a 21-yard touchdown.

The Chiefs ended the half with a field goal and a 10-3 deficit.

Kansas City opened the half with a Patrick Mahomes interception but stopped San Francisco from doing anything on offense in the ensuing drive.

A little later, Chiefs kicker Harrison Buttker broke the record that Moody set with a 57-yard field goal to make the game 10-6.

Late in the third quarter, 49ers punt returner Ray Ray McCloud attempted to pick up a punt that bounced off a teammate but the Chiefs recovered the ball on the 16-yard line.

Mahomes found WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the next play for a touchdown to take a 13-10 lead late in the third quarter.

The Niners used a 12-play, 75-yard drive along with a key fourth down conversion in the red zone to take a 16-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. Chiefs DE Mike Danna blocked the extra point.

A red zone trip ended with a Butker field goal to tie the game and Moody’s 53-yard field goal gave SF the lead with less than two minutes to go.

Mahomes led an 11-play, 64-yard drive to the red zone where Butker ended the drive with a field goal to tie the game at 19 and send it to overtime.

The Niners drove down in eight minutes to the red zone and kicked a field goal to take a 22-19 lead with seven minutes left.

Butker made all four of his field goal attempts along with an extra point.

The Chiefs used almost all of the time left to seal the win with a Mecole Hardman three-yard touchdown.

Mahomes ended the day with 333 yards to go with his 2 TDs and INT and rushed for 66 yards. Tight end Travis Kelce led the receiving with 93 yards.

Pacheco rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries.

The Chiefs have officially reached dynasty status with back-to-back Super Bowls and three Super Bowls in five seasons.
