Storm Track 3 Forecast: A few showers northwest Friday, weekend rain and snow

8 February 2024

It was a picture-perfect afternoon across Kansas! Plenty of sunshine to go around. Overnight temperatures turn colder but not too bitter.

Winds will be much lighter tonight.  There is a piece of energy that will spark rain and snow showers Friday first in Northwest Kansas.

This will track due East and convert to rain showers for Northcentral and Northeast Kansas in the afternoon and evening.  This activity favors areas near and north of I-70.  any snowfall accumulations that are experienced, will only be for just a couple counties near the Kansas/Colorado state line to the northwest. Snowfall accumulations up to an inch or two are possible.

Colder air begins to spill into northwest Kansas first, dropping highs to the 40s while areas ahead of the front reach the 60s.

A stronger system is pegged for the Plains this weekend.  It will indeed take a southerly track. This will skim our viewing area.

Snowfall accumulations are most likely near the Colorado and Oklahoma state lines.  By the lunch hour on Saturday, rain and snow will flirt with our western counties.  Into Saturday night, rain changes to all snow in Southwest Kansas.

A few inches of snow are possible in the southwest corner of Kansas.  Moisture in the form of rain to snow will hug the Oklahoma state line through Sunday. Any rain and snow should end by Sunday night.

The slightest twitch north could bring higher snowfall accumulations into southern Kansas.  The track is greatly important because a change of 50-100 miles could mean the difference from hardly any snow to a plowable snow.

Temperatures this weekend will be mainly in the 30s and 40s. Drier air takes over for much of next week. Highs will climb by mid-week.

After our weekend storm, we will not have a chance for additional moisture until a cold front at the end of next week.  Even then, it does not look like much for Kansas.
