Red flag warnings, no burning in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The National Weather Service (NWS) is issuing red flag warnings for parts of Kansas and Missouri.

At 2:12 a.m., the NWS issued red flag warnings until 9 p.m. due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures.

Areas impacted by the current red flag warning include: Newton, Lawrence, Bourbon, Crawford, Cherokee, Benton, Morgan, Miller, Vernon-St. Clair, Hickory, Camden, Barton, Cedar, Polk Laclede, Jasper, Dade, Greene. These will be under the red flag warning until 9 p.m. The areas could see 20 to 30 mph winds with gusts up to 45 mph.

The NWS says high grassland fire danger is expected in portions of south-central and southeast Kansas. In east-central Kansas, winds could result in brief periods of elevated fire danger. A few hours of high grassland fire danger is possible Friday afternoon in southern Kansas, according to the NWS.

City of Topeka Fire Department Division Chief Alan Stahl says burning isn’t being permitted in Topeka due to the conditions.

To see if burning is currently being allowed you can call the active burn information line at 785-368-4403. The line is updated every morning and will tell residents if burning is allowed in city limits.
