Bridge collapses under driver in Lyon County, repairs unlikely in 2024
7 February 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local Shawnee County residents are set to recover large amounts of cash owed in order to reinstate their driver’s licenses.
A spokeswoman with the Office of the Shawnee County District Attorney said in a press release that the first of six dockets set to make use of Senate Bill 127 were heard on Tuesday, Feb. 6. SB 127, which became law in 2021, authorizes a waiver for traffic fines and court costs for manifest hardship situations.
“The Kansas Legal Services assists in drafting these types of motions to bring the issues to the court and attends the hearing, although they do not formally represent any of the people involved. Before each hearing, the State reviews each motion, the driving record of the person, the amount of money paid toward the judgement, the length of the time since the sentencing and the information included in each defendant’s sworn affidavit concerning their income and family size. Then, at the hearing, the State makes a recommendation to the court.”

On Tuesday, 12 people became eligible to get their licenses back. Several of these individuals accrued more than 10 years of payments, collections and dead ends.
According to the press release, these specialty dockets will continue moving through 2024. Once the Kansas Legal Service wraps up its free clinic, people in Shawnee County will still be able to file motions and appear at the regularly scheduled traffic dockets.
