Chiefs coach Andy Reid shrugs off retirement questions once again

7 February 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Retirement questions come just about every year for Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid when his team is in the Super Bowl.

Before Super Bowl LVII last season, FOX insider Jay Glazer reported that Reid was considering retirement.

After the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles for Reid’s second Super Bowl win, he shot down those rumors.

“If they’ll have me, I’ll stick around,” he said last year.

This year, the 65-year-old head coach is leading his team against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII and got those questions once again.

“My mom and dad told me this when they were working,” Reid said Tuesday. “They said, ‘You’ll know when it’s time, and I’m ready to go right now. Let’s go.’

“That’s what they would tell me when I was young. I was an inquisitive kid, and so that’s the way I look [at it]. Somewhere you’re going to know when it’s time. Today’s not the day.”

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt also wasn’t worried about Reid leaving when he was asked on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio.

“I felt it’s too early to start worrying about that at this point. … It would definitely be premature,'” he said.

“I don’t have a sense for what he’s thinking,” Hunt said. “I do know he’s really engaged and enjoying it, and I have no sense that he’s going to be ready to retire in the near future.

“But in terms of how long it goes, I don’t know. Certainly, I hope it’s a long time in the future, but we’ll just have to see as we go.”

Retirement rumors have also swirled around tight end Travis Kelce.

He’s had one of the most fun years of his career in his quest to lead the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls while breaking records, starring in an internationally known podcast and commercials, and jet-setting the world with popstar Taylor Swift.

Kelce put those rumors to bed at the beginning of the Chiefs’ playoff run, and Reid is doing the same as they hope to continue etching their name in the record books.

“I love being part of the organization,” Reid said. “It’s a great organization. And then we’ve won some games, but we’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep after this thing.”
