6 February 2024
Upper-level clouds will stream our way the rest of Tuesday. Temperatures will remain milder overnight due to the clouds and a strengthening southerly wind.
The wind will be a nuisance as gusts from 35 to 45 MPH+ will ramp up over western Kansas starting tonight and get stronger Wednesday. This may be enough to kick up dust in spots out west.
The axis of intense winds will pick up further into Wednesday night, tracking into central and eastern Kansas. Gusts may exceed 50 MPH and a Wind Advisory may be needed for portions of Kansas. The next cold front is coming our way and is responsible for this uptick in wind.
In addition to the gusty winds, a few showers and potential thunderstorms will develop out west first late Wednesday afternoon. This activity will track to the east into the overnight and depart early Thursday.
The strongest wind gusts should also shift eastward. The wind over our viewing area should relax significantly by midday Thursday.
Temperatures will reset closer to average the remainder of the week.
We are tracking a stronger system this weekend. The track is vital as weather model data keeps trending this system farther and farther south. Southern Kansas may now benefit from a rain to snow mixture late Saturday into Saturday night, missing most of the northern half of the state.
Much of our area could honestly get missed. If this trends farther north, we stand a better shot of rain to accumulating snow. Something to watch closely as the system comes ashore and we get better sampling of the path over the weekend.
Next week looks seasonably cool and not too active with aggressive storm systems for Kansas.
