KU football player promises win after basketball loss, Avery Johnson responds

6 February 2024

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – The Sunflower Showdown rivalry lacks no passion. With more than eight months until the next meeting on the football field, things are heating up.

Monday night’s basketball game had both fan bases fired up. The Wildcats secured a five-point win in overtime, making Tang 2-1 against the Jayhawks.

One Kansas football player offered encouragement to Jayhawk fans on social media.

“We will handle them in football this year,” KU defensive back Cobee Bryant said. “That’s a promise.”

Bryant returns to Kansas for his senior season, after earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors in both 2022 and 2023.

The face of K-State’s program, quarterback Avery Johnson, offered a response without words. Johnson reposted Bryant’s post on X, formerly twitter, with nothing but laughing emoji.

It’s not the first time Bryant has gotten tied up in some in-state rivalry talk on social media. He and former Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. left comments under K-State freshman Jayce Brown’s post on Instagram after the Wildcats’ picked up their 15th-straight Sunflower Showdown win in November 2023.

There is plenty of time for things to cool off, or anticipation to build, before Johnson, Bryant and their teams meet on the football field. K-State will host KU on Oct. 26.
