WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — According to the Derby Police Department, on Monday, Jan. 29, Lieutenant Whitehead responded to an animal control call where a family’s pig was fatally attacked by another animal.

“The pig was the son’s therapy pig and deeply loved by the family,” said the DPD.

DPD Chief Brandon Russell says he did not know Whitehead was getting the family a new pig until she was headed out. He said Whitehead saw what the loss of the pig did to the son, so she took it upon herself to travel and get the family another one.

Whitehead got the replacement pig from Missouri, driving to and from Derby to get it herself.

“The pig was treated like a king and spent the night with Lt. Whitehead,” the DPD said.

On Sunday, Feb. 4, Whitehead took the new pet pig to the family.

“The family was so excited to get their pet replaced. We haven’t seen smiles that big in a while,” the DPD said.
