TOPEKA (KSNT) – State transportation officials are encouraging people to practice safe driving habits as the Super Bowl.
Robyn Meinholdt with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) said in a press release that motorists should exercise caution ahead of the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. Both KDOT and the Drive To Zero Coalition are urging people to make travel arrangements ahead of the game to avoid driving impaired.
“It will be exciting to watch the Chiefs, but don’t let that enthusiasm affect safety,” said Gary Herman, KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager. “If someone you know tries to drive impaired, help them get home another way. They may complain, but they will thank you later.”
From Feb. 8 through to Feb. 11, state law enforcement will be stepping up efforts to ensure the roads remain safe to travel on. Law enforcement will focus on detecting, arresting and removing those who are driving impaired on the roads.
Some tips KDOT is sharing ahead of the Super Bowl for safe driving include:
If you’re planning to drink heavily, stay at home or have a plan to get home safe.
Pick a sober driver in advance.
Call a sober friend or relative to drive for you.
Use a ride share program.
Take the keys away from someone who is impaired if they insist on driving.
