A damp and cooler weekend ahead

2 February 2024

Our next storm system continues to inch its way in our direction. Moisture to our west and southwest will begin to move in later today.

Before rain arrives we will have to watch out for dense fog in Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska. Even though most of the fog has been confined to the northwest corner of the area there could still be some spotty dips in visibility elsewhere.

As a Dense Fog Advisory expires into the early afternoon, rain will start to move in from the southwest.

Some embedded rumbles of thunder are possible with rain that moves in into the weekend. The Storm Prediction Center has a risk of strong to severe storms for Oklahoma and Texas. An isolated risk has stretched into portions of our Oklahoma Panhandle counties.

Wind and hail are the main threats. There could still be some rumbles in the rest of the area. This storm system will also cool temperatures down but for today, they will still be mild for this time of year.

Scattered showers are likely tonight and into Saturday. It would not be surprising to possibly see some small hail and/or gusty winds in some of the embedded storms.

Most low temperatures will stay above freezing. Therefore, wintry weather is not expected and all of the precipitation will be in liquid form.

If you have plans to be outdoors this weekend, you will want to bring those activities inside. There may not be as much moisture in Southwest Kansas Saturday as the drier part of this system will be nearby.

Showers last all the way into Sunday. We will need to monitor the potential for some wintry weather in far Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska early Sunday due to temperatures falling closer to the freezing mark. After midday is when rain will gradually fizzle out and we will be dry by Monday.

The most rain is expected to fall in South Central Kansas with totals between 1″ to 2″. The least rainfall will fall to the southwest with the highest totals being less than 1″.

Today’s average high for Wichita is 46, so even though temperatures will take a dip this weekend at least they will still be near the norm and we will gain some warmth shortly after that.
