TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local law enforcement agency has found a potential connection to a recent animal abuse case in Topeka.
On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Topeka Police Department (TPD) said it helped members of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) rescue dozens of dogs and cats “living in hazardous conditions” from a local home. In total, 73 animals were recovered while 18 were found dead. Two people were arrested in connection to this case.
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the Miami County Sheriff’s Office released new information related to the recovery of eight Great Dane dogs from a property in the 25000 block of Rockville Road in rural Louisburg. Ten other dogs were found dead during this search.
The deceased dogs were sent to Kansas State University for further investigation while the living dogs were sent to Daisy’s Dane Sanctuary. While the animals are showing signs of improvement, many are still weak and sick.
The sheriff’s office said it’s in contact with other Kansas law enforcement agencies, including the TPD and believes there is a connection between the recent dog recovery and the case out of Topeka. Four persons of interest have been identified in the case but have yet to be charged with any crimes. Formal charges that might be filed at a later date include misdemeanor and felony animal cruelty.
You can send donations to Daisy’s Dane Sanctuary to help the dogs by calling 816-721-9989 or by emailing [email protected]. Their website can be found by clicking here. Some of the items being sought by the organization include: collars, beds, shampoo, treats, hamburger, oil, eggs, wheat germ, uncooked oatmeal, metal bowls and toys.
