TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Department of Revenue announced it came in short of its tax collections estimates for January.
In Jan. 2024, the state of Kansas raked in $928.6 million in tax collections. The figure comes $64.1 million or 6.5% below the estimate. Since Jan. 2023, total tax collections are down 11.3%.
Of the total collected, $475.9 million was from income tax, $89.9 million from corporate income tax, combined retail sales and compensating use taxes were $344.3 million. Of those, income tax was down 3.9%, corporate income tax was down 21.9% and combined retail and compensating use tax was down 5.1%.
“Coming short of the estimates for the third month in a row emphasizes that tax cuts must be done in a fiscally responsible way,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “The bipartisan tax package that I’ve proposed to the legislature provides substantive and direct tax relief to all Kansans – without putting at risk our overall economy.”
