BBB expecting scammers ahead of Super Bowl

31 January 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their second Super Bowl appearance in as many years, but the Better Business Bureau is warning those who are planning to attend to be careful.

The BBB said it expects scams leading up to the game, as well as afterward. These scams can come in the form of fake game tickets, merchandise, flights or hotels that are not legitimate.

“The expectation is that scammers will not leave any stone unturned,” Josh Planos, VP of Communications and Public Relations for the BBB, said. “This is an opportunity to wedge your way into a billion-dollar market. There is a lot of money that will change hands in the coming weeks.”

The BBB’s biggest tip is to only purchase tickets from an official vendor like Ticketmaster and don’t buy anything through social media.

The BBB said it hasn’t received any notification yet, though, of scammers. But as the game gets closer, things could ramp up. One way to do that is through rental scams.

“So, it really does cover a broad spectrum, Planos said. “Las Vegas, of course, there are going to be some folks who are interested in staying off the strip. So there might be some rental listing that might actually not be real, might be fraudulent ploys to gain access to personal and payment information which is what every scam is after.”
