15 train cars derail in north Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A train has derailed in the north Topeka area on Monday afternoon.

KSNT 27 News reached out to the Union Pacific Railroad regarding a possible train derailment in Topeka near the Great Overland Station. Meg Ronspies with Union Pacific confirmed 15 train cars derailed around 2:20 p.m. on Jan. 22 near Northwest Railroad Street and Northwest Harrison Street.

While the train has derailed, the cars are not flipped over. No injuries have been reported in connection to this incident. Ronspies said clean up for the derailment is taking place alongside an investigation into what caused it.

City of Topeka spokeswoman Rosie Nichols also confirms a train derailment took place with officers from the Topeka Police Department responding to the area. She is encouraging motorists to avoid the area near the train tracks at North Kansas Avenue and Northeast Norris Street at this time.

On Dec. 27, another train derailed near the same area in north Topeka. Five cars derailed with some spilling their contents on the tracks.
