WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An elderly woman, one dog and one cat were saved from a house fire that killed seven dogs and two cats on Friday.
A news release from the Sedan Police Department said shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, first responders were called to the 400 block of W. Main St. in Sedan for the report of a structure fire.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke billowing from the doors and windows of the structure. A bystander told them an elderly woman was inside and trapped.
The immense amount of smoke prevented entry by personnel into the front door to attempt to reach her. The bystander then told them they believed the woman was trapped in the southwest corner of the house.
The bedroom window was broken out and the woman was discovered on the floor nearby. She was pulled through the opening and carried to safety. She was conscious and breathing, and EMS transported her to a local hospital where she is in stable condition.
The fire was so intense and spread so fast, though, that the house could not be saved and is a total loss.
Authorities said while one dog and one cat were rescued from the fire, seven dogs and two cats were trapped inside and killed.
