KU basketball drops road contest at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV. (KSNT) – Kansas men’s basketball traveled to West Virginia Saturday for the second game of a road trip.

Kansas couldn’t get past West Virginia in a wire-to-wire close game, as the Mountaineers was 91-85.

The Jayhawks built a seven-point lead less than five minutes into the game, but two quick West Virginia 3’s changed the game. After trading shots, the Mountaineers built a six-point lead with less than five minutes until half time.

KU put together a 10-2 run to retake the lead, but West Virginia went on a run of its own after. The two traded the lead down to the halftime buzzer. The entered the break tied at 51.

The Mountaineers scored four unanswered points to start the second half. KU answered with six and the two continued to go on mini runs until the final buzzer.

West Virginia held a two-point lead with 34.8 seconds left and continued to draw fouls to expand it.

The Jayhawks can draw fouls, too. Johnny Furphy made two free throws with 28 seconds left to pull his team within two points.

Elmarko Jackson tripped a Mountaineer as West Virginia tried to run out the final 20 seconds, giving the team two more free throws. After free throws, West Virginia finished on top with 91-85 win.

Neither team held more than a 7-point lead.

McCullar Jr. led the Jayhawks with 24 points. Dickinson added 19 points, Furphy with 13, Timberlake with 12 and Adams Jr. with 11.

The loss moves No. 3 Kansas to 15-3, 3-2 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks host Cincinnati on Monday, Jan. 22.
