TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center calls its newest exhibit ‘unique’ in comparison to previous ones.
‘XOXO: An Exhibit About Love and Forgiveness’ opened at the Discovery Center Friday morning. It was designed by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, with support from the Fetzer Institute.
Discovery Center president and CEO Dené Mosier says the new exhibit features hands-on activities that allow children to create and control the entire experience themselves.
“We make all of our decisions at the child here, and so we know we can meet children where they are by bringing special exhibits in,” Mosier said. “This one is pretty special we feel lucky to have it here over valentines day when we’re thinking about love, we’re thinking about connection and it’s another way for us to celebrate community.”
The goal of the exhibit, Mosier says, is to focus on relationships and emotions.
It includes activities like ‘tone phones’ where children can communicate with each other and turn their voices into animations. There are also drawing stations, where kids can jot down any negative emotions they may be feeling on paper and shred that paper away afterward.
XOXO: An Exhibit About Love and Forgiveness is open until April 17. The Discovery Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Mosier says normal hours resume Jan. 23.
