WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — During the Arkansas City City Commission on Jan. 16, Mayor Jay Warren declared Arkansas City the first Purple Heart City in Cowley County.
Members of the VFW Post 1254 were present while Warren read the proclamation. The meeting also welcomed Randy Frank, the Department of Kansas American Legion Commander.
“The designation of Arkansas City as a Purple Heart City holds deep meaning. It reflects the city’s dedication to recognizing and honoring Purple Heart recipients, both living and deceased. Additionally, the city aims to pay tribute to all veterans residing within its boundaries who have bravely served in the military,” Frank said.
Frank’s son is commemorated through the Seargent Kevin A. Gilbertson Memorial Bridge in south Arkansas City.
Arkansas City city manager Randy Frazer is also coordinating efforts to create signage with the new declaration at the city limits. The initiative includes plans for a recognition celebration to commemorate the occasion once the signs are installed.
