TOPEKA (KSNT) – One Washburn basketball team keeps a streak alive, while the other ends its home streak.
The men’s team beat Missouri Southern, 70-65, to keep the home winning-streak alive. However, the women’s undefeated home stand ends with a 69-50 loss to the Lions.
Men’s recap:
The Ichabods moved to 8-0 at home on Wednesday night.
Washburn (11-5, 7-3 MIAA) trailed by a game-high seven points with 17:40 to play in the game. Topeka-native Jack Bachelor ignited a 15-2 run that lasted longer than five minutes to push Washburn up, 46-40.
Missouri Southern cut Washburn’s lead to three at 53-50 after hitting back-to-back 3-pointers. Then, the Ichabods used a 5-0 run to go up 58-50 with 7:12 left. However, the ‘Bods missed their next five shots and the Lions went on an 8-0 run to tie the score at 58 with 3:21 left in the game.
The Lions cut the lead to two with less than a minute to go, but the Ichabods finished the game 6-of-6 from the free throw line for the five-point win.
Women’s recap:
Washburn women’s basketball was unable to bounce back from a slow offensive start. Early on, the Ichabods (10-6, 5-5 MIAA) were able to build a lead, going up 8-4 after Aubree Dewey and Madelyn Amekporfor each went coast-to-coast for layups off of turnovers.
In the second quarter, the Ichabods had trouble scoring with their first and only point coming on a free throw from Liz Boyd. Missouri Southern led 28-12 at the half.
Out of the break, Washburn was able to score at a quick pace, going 6-12 overall for the quarter. However, on the other end, Missouri Southern shot 9-11 in the frame. The Lions kept adding onto their lead and resulted in the 69-50 loss for Washburn.
Next, both teams host Pitt State on Saturday.
