MEADE, Kan. (KSNW) — The Meade County sheriff is warning residents not to fall victim to scam sweepstakes calls.
Sheriff Doug Ritter says a resident called the sheriff’s office after receiving a call from a scammer claiming that they had just won the Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes. Sheriff Ritter says the resident didn’t provide the caller with any information.
Sheriff Ritter says scammers will often try to distract you with the thought of winning something significant or, in some scams, the threat of fines or jail for you to provide them with personal information or coerce you into handing over money.
The actual Publisher’s Clearing House can be called to confirm if you have won at 1-800-566-4724. You can also report if you have received a scam to the company by clicking here.
You can report scam calls directly to the Federal Trade Commission on their website.
