HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) — A 75-year-old man is in custody in connection to a homicide in Hutchinson nearly 42 years ago.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the Phoenix man was arrested for his alleged role in the 1982 murder of Michael McKeown.
KSN News will not release the man’s name because he has not been charged yet. That is expected to happen on Friday.
McKeown, 44, was found dead on the morning of March 24, 1982. He had been shot to death while in his car outside his apartment at 320 E. Sherman Street.
The Hutchinson Police Department and the KBI investigated. In the last year, KBI agents interviewed people in three states. The KBI says it is still investigating but has enough evidence to proceed with an arrest and charges.
The KBI agents got the arrest warrant for the 75-year-old man in late January, and Phoenix officers arrested him in Phoenix. They booked him on suspicion of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The suspect waived extradition. Authorities brought him back to Kansas and booked him into the Reno County Jail on Wednesday morning.
The Reno County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute the case.
