TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Have you ever checked to see if you’re entitled to unclaimed property in Kansas?
Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson is raising awareness about unclaimed property as of Feb. 1 in light of National Unclaimed Property Day. Millions in cash and property are waiting for people to make claims in the Sunflower State, according to a press release from the treasurer’s office.
“Our office currently holds more than $575 million in unclaimed property for Kansans,” Johnson said. “It is estimated that one in seven people nationwide has unclaimed property – so it’s worth checking regularly to see if you, your family or friends have funds available to claim. National Unclaimed Property Day is the perfect opportunity to do a quick, easy, free online search.”
Nearly 33 million people in the country have unclaimed property, according to estimates from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA). These include financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for a number of years.
If the proper owner can’t be found, the money and/or properties are sent to the state, according to the treasurer’s office. Examples of common types of unclaimed property include benefits, stocks, bonds, forgotten bank accounts and safe deposit boxes.
National Unclaimed Property Day is also marked with a warning for people trying to find their unclaimed property: scammers exist and could claim to help in finding unclaimed property.
